A Tale of Surprising Kindness: The Time a University Student Let Me Stay on Her Dorm Ground

During the year 2006, I traveled to the Australian capital for an interview at a medical college. I figured to book a place to stay when I arrived, however when I arrived, a large conference was taking place and every single budget hostels and cheap hotels had no vacancies.

As a visitor from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind perhaps I could spend the night at the airport – but soon learned the local airport, unlike Singapore’s, closes around the clock. With no idea what my next move should be and growing worried, I boarded public transport and started wandering towards the casino, thinking I could pass the night somewhere that was open through the night. This was not ideal in the best shape to succeed at an interview the following day, but as a student on a tight budget, luxury accommodation was impossible.

We could all use more individuals with such compassion.

Apparently, I appeared confused since a woman spotted me wandering around the city and wondered if everything was alright. I explained my situation and without hesitation she offered I could crash on the floor at her university residence at ANU – which was perfect, considering that was where my interview would take place the next morning. She even offered a meal: one sandwiches she brought back her evening job. I was able to use a hot shower and somewhere safe and safe to sleep.

In retrospect, I now understand what a big chance she took as a young woman letting a guy who was a complete stranger crash at her place. Back then I was in my male privilege bubble and was oblivious to such safety concerns. As a dad now, it astounds me she offered that help – but still incredibly thankful.

I never did study at ANU, and I never saw that kind stranger again, yet her memory has stayed with me her amazing act of kindness. My sincere desire is that the universe has rewarded her act of kindness abundantly. We could all use more individuals with such compassion.
