The North London club has officially announced that its disputed sponsorship arrangement with Visit Rwanda will terminate in the coming June.

Origins and Examination

This deal, reportedly valued at around ten million pounds each year, was initiated six years ago and has since been heavily criticized.

The backlash arises from Rwanda's alleged support for the M23 militia in continuing hostilities in the eastern part of the bordering Congo.

In February, Arsenal was criticized for committing a disrespectful act to the authorities in Congo by not arranging a meeting with the DRC's foreign minister to address the sponsorship.

Deal Composition and Aims

Visit Rwanda serves as an arm of the the country's development agency, which is a state institution.

There is broad consensus that Arsenal committed to and maintained this partnership mainly to grow their African supporter base.

Nevertheless, the deal has now ended after both parties “mutually agreed” to end their collaboration.

“Jointly, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have surpassed the primary aims of the partnership – advocating preservation and sustainable tourism, encouraging numerous followers to explore Rwanda, and building a solid groundwork for travel industry expansion,” stated an Gunners' release.

The release further noted that the partnership has also supported Rwanda's objective to emerge as an global sports center in Africa and host more global sporting events while implementing local football projects that have supported many aspiring footballers and coaches enhance their abilities and encourage more involvement in sport across the country.

Management Opinion and Fan Backlash

Richard Garlick, Arsenal's chief executive officer, portrayed the arrangement as a “important voyage” and asserted it had been “advancing” the club's ambitions.

However, this perspective was not shared by a segment of the club's followers, with the activist organization Arsenal Peace Advocates holding rallies outside the Emirates Stadium during the first leg of the Champions League semi-final against the French club in April's conclusion.

Protesters displayed a placard declaring “Terminate the Visit Rwanda Partnership” and provided wristbands to conceal the Rwanda branding on kits.

Industry Perspective and Fellow Clubs

In the same month, PSG extended their sponsorship arrangement with Visit Rwanda for several more years.

At the same time, the Spanish club signed a fresh deal for the same period that has resulted in the branding featured on the La Liga side's male and female kits.
