Heat & Portland Trail Blazers Claim Initial Victories After Player Detentions
Miami scored eighty-six first-half points against the Grizzlies
The Heat secured a decisive 146 to 114 victory against the Memphis Grizzlies in their initial basketball match after player Rozier was detained over alleged illegal sports betting.
Portland Trail Blazers coach Billups was also detained as part of a broad federal probe into sports betting. The two individuals deny the allegations.
However, the Miami team were focused as they scored eighty-six opening half points to be ahead of the Grizzlies by thirty-nine at halftime, the biggest halftime lead in the franchise's 37-year history.
Adebayo led the way with twenty-four scores and later said Terry had the support of the team.
"We support him. Full support," Adebayo stated. "We are with him all the way. He's like family at the end of the day."
Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra commented: "Terry is somebody who is important to everyone. He's had a beneficial influence on our locker room.
"We send our thoughts and support for him as he goes through the situation."
Portland also secured their first game after the detentions, with Brazil-born Splitter stepping in as interim coach in Chauncey's non-attendance and guiding the squad to a convincing 139-119 victory over the Golden State Warriors.
"We all had positive times with Billups and his coaching style," Splitter remarked. "We're thinking of him and his family but we have a job to do."
League Commissioner Silver 'Upset' by Recent Events
Speaking about the arrests for the first time, NBA commissioner Silver said he was "deeply disturbed" by the incidents of the past few days.
"There's nothing more important to the NBA and its fans than the integrity of the competition," he informed a broadcaster. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was very upsetting."
Silver also said an league probe into Rozier's actions in March 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a game he participated for the Charlotte Hornets against the New Orleans Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"It was brought to our attention by the authorities and the betting companies," he added.
"We then looked into the matter and were very transparent regarding it. Although there was the unusual wagering, we, honestly, found no evidence.
"Federal authorities has legal authority... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can take various actions that the league office is unable to.
"So, we've been cooperating from that point. And, of course, what they revealed recently was an charge.
"Moreover two and a half years after, he still hasn't been convicted of anything, in fairness to Terry.
"Clearly, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a balance here between protecting people's rights and investigating."
