NY Introduces Reporting Tool for Public to Submit Immigration Videos After Detentions of 4 US Citizens

The state attorney general has launched a fresh online portal urging locals to share visual evidence of federal immigration enforcement across New York. This move comes just a shortly after a major immigration operation rattled NYC's Chinatown, sparking large-scale outcry.

US Citizens Arrested In Raid

A congressional representative disclosed during a midweek briefing that four US citizens were taken into custody and kept for "about 24 hours" following the previous day's operation. Protests broke out in the city on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

"Every New Yorker has the right to live without fear," the AG stated in a release.

"Anyone who observed and recorded federal operations recently, I urge you to provide that footage with my office. We are dedicated to examining these submissions and determining any legal breaches."

Submission Process

The portal provides spaces to send photos and videos of the incident, plus a area to note geographic details. When submitting, submitters must check a box that states that "the attorney general might employ any materials, images, or footage in a official report, including in a lawsuit or public report."

Information about the ICE Action

The Manhattan operation, which observers say featured dozens of federal agents, took place in a popular neighborhood of the city where fake products and other goods are regularly available widely – frequently to tourists.

Recordings of the operation depict multiple hooded and equipped federal agents restraining and arresting a individual, and pushing back witnesses. Crowds of residents followed the officers along the roads. An armored truck was observed traveling down the urban roads.

Official Reactions

In a news conference held with the immigrant advocacy group, Representative Goldman, a Democratic representative, announced that four US citizens were arrested by immigration for about 24 hours and that there were "no circumstances where US citizens should be taken for without cause." He noted the persons were freed on Wednesday with no accusations made.

"There's a clear purpose here. It is not about removing offenders," he said. "This constitutes a militarized effort to provoke unrest. It is simply a justification to provoke conflict for federal officials to deploy the armed forces to halt conflict that they initiated."

Widespread Condemnation

Fury over the ICE raid rapidly grew – every mayoral candidates criticized the incident, as did Governor Kathy Hochul.

"Repeatedly, the federal government chooses authoritarian theatrics that generate terror, not safety. It needs to cease," one mayoral candidate wrote.

New York City immigrant rights groups spoke out as well.

"Federal officers raided the neighborhood with tactical trucks, hooded officers and protective equipment to target local sellers attempting to earn income. This operation had nothing to do with public safety and everything to do with terrorizing immigrant families and areas," stated the president of a major immigrant coalition.

ICE Policies

Official guidelines forbids the holding of citizens and the agency has said it does not arrest or detain citizens. However, independent reporting has revealed that more than 170 US citizens have been held against their will by federal agents since the beginning of the current administration.

Recent Pattern

ICE raids have been cropping up increasingly in New York and nationwide recently.

A mid-October raid in the city center was the earliest reported action on an housing center of the current administration. Rallies against ICE are commonplace along with claims of violence and cruel conditions.

Most recently, a letter provided by advocacy organizations stated medical neglect of pregnant women in ICE facilities.
