The Two Fatalities Named in the Providence Campus Attack as Law Enforcement Persist in Search for Gunman.

Both young individuals who were killed in the recent tragic incident in Providence had tributes paid to them on Monday – while an intensive search for their shooter persisted following the discharge by authorities in Rhode Island of the only individual detained in connection in the case.

Honoring a Lost Student

The young woman Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, was remembered as “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, according to the Advent Cathedral in Birmingham, which paid tribute to her at a gathering on Sunday.

Her role included vice-president of Brown’s division of College Republicans of America, as the club stated. Karoline Leavitt also shared condolences publicly, stating: “Words cannot express. Thinking of her loved ones and companions, especially her parents.”

The Second Victim

The other deceased individual was an Uzbek national named MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, from Uzbekistan in his initial year at the renowned school, his family confirmed.

The victim's identification was confirmed by Uzbekistan’s foreign ministry.

“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. He had big dreams of pursuing a career in neurosurgery and helping people,” his sibling Samira said in a online post.

What Happened

Nine other people were wounded in the weekend shooting in the engineering department of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.

Law enforcement reported on Sunday evening that a 24-year-man taken into custody in a police operation at a Hampton Inn about 17 miles from the university earlier in the day was released from custody.

“We have a murderer out there,” stated Peter Neronha, Peter Neronha.

He continued, “Investigations can lead one way, and then you need to change course and head another way, and this is precisely what occurred over the last 24 hours or so.”

Ongoing Concerns

Brett Smiley, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “This will probably generate new worry for our public”.

The shooter began shooting inside a classroom in the engineering facility on over the weekend, firing more than 40 rounds from a 9mm handgun, a law enforcement official informed the news agency.

Law enforcement that searched the inn recovered two firearms and two ammunition clips when the individual was taken into custody, according to reports.

The Wounded Victims

Among those wounded, one student was discharged from care, said Brown’s president, Christina Paxson. Seven more were in grave but unchanging health, and one remained in critical care, authorities stated on Sunday.

Durham Academy, a private academy in the city of Durham, said a recent graduate, Kendall Turner, was in the group of seriously hurt victims.

More Condolences

Cook was remembered at a church service in Birmingham on Sunday. A clergyman said, “She shone as a remarkable, stable, devout beacon not only here growing up... but at Brown she was an incredible light in that specific location as well.”

The president of College Republicans, Martin Bertao, posted a statement from the club. “Ella was recognized for her courageous, valiant, and compassionate nature as she worked for her branch and fellow classmates,” he said.

The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “profoundly grieved” by the passing of Umurzokov in a tribute. “We extend our sincere condolences to the Umurzokov family, companions, and schoolmates and grieve for of his promising future.”

National Context

The weekend's murders at Brown, the country's seventh most historic university with about thousands of bachelor's and postgraduate students, happened during one of at least 392 mass shootings recorded nationally so far in 2025, according to records. The following Monday was the 349th day of the year.
